Ellis Island

A few weeks ago, on my 8th grade trip, we took the Staten Island Ferry to the Statue of Liberty. Then we took the ferry to Ellis Island. Ellis Island is where immigrants first arrived when coming to the United States. We toured the immigration museum and the family history center. At the end of our visit, we walked through the gift shop full of New York trinkets and memorabilia. I decided to purchase a small magnet as a gift. While waiting in line to buy the magnet, I filed through my wallet which was heavy with coins and prepared the money to pay. I decided to pay with exact change since the total ended with $.25. I handed a few dollar bills to the woman and managed to pull a quarter out of my wallet. The woman squinted at the coin and handed it back to me, explaining that the coin was an Ellis Island collectable quarter. I quickly pulled my purse out again and grabbed another quarter, not fully taking in what the woman had said. After I stuffed the receipt into my bag and exited the gift shop, I took out the quarter and looked at the drawing of Ellis Island on the coin. I still find it incredibly ironic that while I was at Ellis Island
